Reflections on summer: why looking back matters

September brings that familiar back-to-school energy. It makes it tempting to dive straight into fresh starts and focus on the last few months of the year - I definitely do this myself.

But if you skip looking back, you’re missing a valuable opportunity. Because before you look forward, there are gems to be found by reflecting on what’s already happened.
Summer often shifts our rhythm
Maybe you slowed down, travelled or spent more time with family. Whatever your summer looked like, it will have taught you something.
Ask yourself:
What did I enjoy most about this summer?
When did I feel most like myself?
What (or who) gave me energy -and what drained it?
What did I learn about what I need right now?
These reflections aren’t just about your summer.
They’re clues that can help shape how you approach work, life and the months ahead. Too often, we rush past experiences without noticing what they’re showing us.
The value of reflection
I know I’m always focused on what’s coming up next - I think it’s part of being a parent. But coaching has taught me the value of pausing to reflect, draw out insights and use them to make more intentional choices.
For me, this summer was my most relaxed yet. It was my first summer not in my corporate job and juggling work around the kids was so much easier. My business took a little backseat but I really needed the break and a chance to reset.
My main takeaway: it’s great to push myself and work hard but not all year round. Breaks are essential for my mental health, so I can enjoy precious time with my family and mean I return to work refreshed and replenished.
