You open a job board.
Scroll for a bit.
Save a few roles.
There’s nothing wrong with them.
But there’s nothing you actually want either.

And while you scroll, that flat, heavy feeling kicks in.
That’s the signal.
It’s easy to assume the problem is the market - that there just aren’t many good roles out there.
But most of the time, that’s not it.
What’s really going on is simpler but harder to admit:
You don’t want another version of what you’re already doing.
Why job searching starts to feel pointless
At this point, most men keep going anyway.
They keep scrolling. Apply for a few things. Tell themselves the next role might feel different.
It won’t.
Because if the underlying work is the same, the experience usually is too.
Different company. Same problems.
That’s why the motivation drops off so quickly.
You’re not being lazy - you’re recognising something isn’t right.
The mistake most people make
When this feeling shows up, there’s a tendency to either:
ignore it and keep pushing through; or
swing to the other extreme and think a complete life overhaul is needed.
Neither is helpful.
Because for many men, the answer isn’t “just get another job” - but it’s also not “retrain and start from the beginning”.
What actually needs to change
If you’re at this point, it usually means one thing:
The fit isn’t right anymore.
That could be:
The type of work.
The level of responsibility.
The environment.
The way your time and energy are being used.
And until you get clear on that, you risk repeating the same cycle.
If this feels familiar
If this feels close to home, you don’t need to figure it out on your own.
I offer a free 30-minute call where we look at:
Where you are right now.
What’s causing that flat feeling.
What might need to change.
No pressure. No pitch. Just an honest, human conversation.
